Varsity Football Player Dies after Friday Night Game

16-year-old Ridge Barden of New York died after suffering a head injury during the 3rd quarter of a football game, stunning staff and students who say he was conscious after the incident, only to die later at the hospital.  This brings further scrutiny to the sport, and contact sports in general, which have been under fire in recent years for not providing equipment that adequately protects players.  Read more of the story

I don’t know what more coaches can do, though, since helmets are a prerequisite.  Right when I found out I was having a boy, my husband and I talked about whether we’d ever let him play football and the decision was “no,” despite a long history of football players on my side of the family.
