Not Enough of a Highly Effective Kids’ Cancer Drug Has Parents, Doctors Alarmed

There was nearly a crisis when the gold standard of drugs in children’s cancer treatment, methotrexate, was in critically low supplies. Its primary manufacturer halted production last November due to quality control issues.  The drug is used to fight childhood cancers like acute lymphoblastic leukemia(ALL) and has been proven to be nearly 100% effective in combating ALL. Methotrexate is also used to fight bone cancers, brain tumors and lymphoma.  Although other manufacturers have been asked to ramp up supply of methotrexate in the meantime, parents and doctors remain concerned when the next shortage will strike.  Read more
