“Parent Trigger” Laws aren’t as Simple as Giving Parents Power

When parents are not satisfied with their kids’ persistently failing public schools, they are now able to pull the trigger in California, with Texas, Ohio and Connecticut passing similar legislation as well.  To pull the trigger, parents rally together by petition to see the school either closed, given a makeover with new principal and staff, or changed into a charter school.  All it takes is 51% of parents from a school to make this happen.  Many are watching to see what happens next at McKinley Elementary in Compton, California, as many parents are trying to see the process through but are now up against unforeseen challenges.    Read more here
