How Can You Tell If a Book is Too Hard For a Young Reader?

How Can You Tell If a Book is Too Hard For a Young Reader?By Julie Samrick

Sometimes finding the right book for a young reader can be like Goldilocks- it’s either too easy or too hard.  How can you find the right fit?  Here’s a quick test:

Open a random page in the middle of a book.  Ask your child to read it out loud to you.  If he or she mispronounces or stumbles over more than two words on the page, it is probably too difficult.  On the other hand, if he or she whizzes through it, it may be too easy.

Here is a site that can match your children’s reading levels with the best books for them. See lexile.com

If you do not know your child’s lexile score from standardized testing, you can still answer some simple questions to get the best matched books.
