Hispanics Flee Alabama Schools After HB 56 Law Goes Into Effect

Alabama is enforcing key parts of its new HB 56 law, which says it’s a crime to be undocumented and allows schools to check the immigrant status of students.  Several Alabama school districts with large Hispanic enrollments have reported a sudden exodus of students.

The superintendent in Huntsville, one of the state’s largest cities, went on a Spanish-language TV program Thursday to quell fears, urging families to send their children to class and explained that the state is only trying to gather statistics.

The Obama administration announced its plans Friday to appeal the ruling that upheld the law.
