Giveaway- Newly Released Children’s Book ‘Forest Has a Song’

By Julie Samrick

We know kids devour Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein, so why aren’t there more books of poetry aimed toward children on the market? I was pleasantly surprised when I learned about a new book of poems for children just in time for spring and Earth Day.

Author Amy Ludwig VanDerwater’s Forest Has a Song
is a breath of fresh spring air! It contains 26 poems centered on a girl’s various walks through nature and how the different animals, flowers, leaves, and so much more appear through the child’s young, impressionable eyes.

Kids ages 5-10 will enjoy reading the girl’s perspective:

A spider is a “never-tangling dangling spinner / knitting angles, trapping dinner.”

They will also enjoy getting inside the minds of the subjects- this one of an owl and its mom of a “first flight:”

Mommy, I’m scared to be this high/ All owls are scared on their first try.

My tail feathers feel so tingly with fear / You can do it. Calm down. Careful now. Steer.

The watercolor illustrations by Robbin Gourley on every page are truly breathtaking.

Poetry is meant to be heard, to be read aloud, and kids will enjoy reading this beautiful, 32-page, hardcover book with you. My 7-year-old daughter and I take turns reading each poem.

VanDerwater is a credentialed teacher and she has a website called Poem Farm, which offers ideas to get kids excited about poetry for parents and teachers.
