Fall Into Fitness as a Family

By Lauren Anderson

Fall is here, along with school, sports and crazy schedules.  As we fall back into routine, it is easy to let some things fall by the wayside such as our own fitness.  But who is to say that we can’t incorporate our fitness program into our kids’ new schedules? Research has shown that we need to get our heart rate up for a minimum of 30 minutes EVERY day!   …can’t find 30 minutes in your day?  Then here are 5 ways that you CAN work in your work out!

1)      Wear your walking/running shoes to your child’s athletic practice and walk or jog for 45 min.  Bring the jogger, if you have additional youngsters with you.

2)      Trade for childcare with a friend during sporting events.  30 mins for each of you.

3)      Invite your kids to join you during your workout DVD.   My kids LOVE doing this and it usually turns into a fun competition to see who can do more pushups and lunges!

4)      Plan a family hike.  This may not work during your week, but choose 1 weekend per month to get outside as a family for even just 45 minutes.

5)      Sign up as a family for a fall 5k or fun run.  No matter what your fitness level, these can be a lot of fun.  In addition, what a great example you will be setting for your family!

Let’s not let hectic schedules get in the way of our health.  Exercising is very important for us physically and emotionally.  Remember, take care of yourself and you will be able to take even better care of those around you.
