Chinese Toddler, Victim of Twice Hit-and-Run, Dies

A 2-year-old toddler died Friday, a week after she was run over not once, but twice, and then left in the streets while at least 16 witnesses passed her by on a busy street in Beijing.  The girl, Wang Yue, died of brain and organ failure. “Her injuries were too severe,” the intensive care director told reporters.

This sad case has come to symbolize what many see as an erosion of morals in society and a lack in empathy after years of economic growth and rising prosperity in China.  Some experts say an unwillingness to help others, or a lack of altruism, is an effect of urbanization, as migrants flow into cities and create neighborhoods of strangers.

It reminds me of the saying, “We are only as strong as our weakest link.”  Read more details about this story.
