CLOSED Animal Lover Giveaway- Books and a $25 Gift Card

Author on her farm

The winner is revealed on our Facebook page

Author Kathleen Callaghan Mendenhall blends animal facts and fantastic story lines into the 4 children’s books of her “Giggling Goats & Buddy Too” series.

All of the characters in Mendenhall’s books are based on the real goats and guard dogs she and her husband, Farmer B., care for at Wacky Farms in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

In How Buddy Found His Bark, Buddy the guard dog must find his bark, the number one trait for a good guard dog.

His bark will warn if a predator is near,

to keep his goats from having fear.

He will guard his herd and wait to hear

a coyote, a mountain lion, or maybe a big bear.

The rhyming couplets throughout all of the books are pleasing to everyone’s ears (my husband always says his favorite books to read aloud to our kids always rhyme).

As a plus, each of the magical animal stories has a theme young audiences can understand too, including lessons surrounding important issues like friendship, loyalty and pride.

The books all have color illustrations, and are approximately 15 pages in length.  The books are geared to kids ages 3-10.

The other 3 books in the series are:

Moo Moo Sue (a goat, much to her chagrin, can only moo)

Oh Dear Oh Dear, You Have No Ears! (teaches about the different breeds of goats.  The author has LaMancha goats, which, we learn, have tiny ears)

Howdy, Howdy, Howdy!  My Name is Rowdy! (tells the story of a boisterous dog named Rowdy, who is much too loud for his friends’ ears)

You can win a new set of the 4 “Giggling Goats and Buddy Too” books in the series, including a $25 Pet Smart gift card to use in store or e-certificate to use on-line (your choice if you win).  This prize has a $60 value.  A VISA gift card may be substituted.

One of my favorite pet memorys is one faithful Christmas we had a big cookie exchange at work and I came home with a plate loaded with the most delish cookies. I had set the plate down on our kitchen table and went in the next room to let my mom know I was home and what great cookies I had gotten. When I returned, I found the plate on the floor and our 140lb black lab Marty devouring every last cookie! Marty had climbed up on the kitchen table and gotten the plate of coveted christmas cookies. This dog was notorious for getting into any kind of food but this was one of his highlights :)

  14. This might seem like an odd favorite memory, but when our black lab Ruby was very old, she layed under a shade tree in our yard and found her final resting place. It was so peaceful for her and for our family to know she was comfortable, happy and with us–no interventions at all…

  19. Katharine says:

What is your favorite pet memory … hmmm, that is a hard one as I have had many pet friends over the years. I guess when my kitten Tolkien jumped over my shoulder into my plate of spaghetti and sauce and then ran tracking tiny red kitten prints and leaving chunks of spaghetti all over the floor LOL. It was a pain to clean up – but SOOOOO cute.

  30. My favorite pet memory was when our Iguana got out and climbed up our huge Christmas tree. Our parents weren’t home at the time and my brother and I had a time getting it back to where it was supposed to be.

  31. My favorite pet memory was the first night I had my first dog. He was a little jack russell terrier puppy and I was 8. My mom let him sleep in my room, but told me to make sure he sleeps in his pen so that he didn’t get used to sleeping in a bed. Well…my little Max kept started whimpering, and I had to pick him up. He fell asleep on my chest…and slept in my bed every day after that.

  47. It has to be my first dog Charlie, he was a sweet beagle -basset hound mix

  48. One of my favorite childhood memories is a bitter-sweet one. We had a parrot named Olive Oil, she was beautiful, funny and had a large vocabulary. She would say things like “Pet’s are people too” and “Leisa telephone.” When she got older she became very sick and had to stay at the vet’s office for awhile. She wouldn’t eat at all unless I went to visit her. The vet couldn’t believe it, he had never seen anything like it. It showed me just how special animals are. They truly have individual personalities and know so much more than we give them credit for.

  49. Jill Myrick says:

My favorite pet memory is of my first kitten when I was five.

  52. Laura Benjamin says:

We were walking in our neighborhoods right after Hurricane Katrina struck to see all the damage she left behind. We were at the end of our street and saw a house that only had a porch standing. My 6 year old daughter said that she heard a noise coming from it but I didn’t want to chance going near it. She told that it sounded like a puppy and we just had to go and see. With 2 dogs at home and with her near tears we decided to up to the porch. Under it was a little puppy that someone had left behind. It was so afraid and shaking and my daughter went up to the puppy and scooped her up with her hands. I knew we could not leave the puppy so we brought her home. She was so frightened at first but after a couple of weeks it was like she knew she was safe and loved. Today she is a happy and healthy 6 year old and I don’t know what we would do without her!

  57. I have so mny memories, because easy pet means so much to me. But one of my favorites was the day our Pudgy Princess came into our lives – we had sworn we were going to be careful and not feed her too many treats, and it lasted all of five minutes before she turned my DH to mush. :)
